The definition of declutter is to remove unnecessary items from an untidy or overcrowded place.  We’ve all heard the old saying, out with the old and in with the new.  We’ve put a slightly different spin on that old saying to “prepare for the new”.   Decluttering your home is not only essential for staging to sell, but a way to make a fresh start in your new home.  This opportunity, and it really is an opportunity, should be viewed as a time to change and rid yourself of excess baggage and stuff that no longer serve its purpose.

 

Why is it important to Declutter?

  • Home Staging - When selling your home, decluttering is important part of staging to depersonalize your home and get ready to sell.  You don’t want prospective buyers focusing on who you are, how you live, and your interests; they need to mentally see themselves living in the home you are selling.
  • Peace of Mind - Most people will clean and declutter for the beginning of the seasons and no matter what the season or time of year, we refer to this deep cleaning as “Spring Cleaning”.  The reasons people do a spring cleaning and declutter is, not only do they want  a clean and uncluttered home, but an amazing thing happens when you start to declutter your home, you also start to declutter your mind.  Decluttering can be a cathartic experience releasing emotions and clearing your mind.  Deluttering is not easy for many people due to emotional and sentimental attachment.  You may want to have another person (friend or family member) who does not have the same emotional attachment to your items and you do and have them walk you through the process.
  • For Your New Home - Because you are moving into an empty, clean new home, don’t make the mistake of storing clutter to stage properly and then turn around and have the same mess, but at a new location.  Make a fresh new start and get rid of it or give it away.  

 

What to do with your Clutter – Four sections to create for a successful declutter.

As you inventory your items, ensure you do it room by room and complete one before moving on to the next.  For each room, create 4 sections (piles, bags or boxes) and put items in the appropriate section as you go through them.

  1. Throw it Away - Get rid of the old stuff you no longer use and keep emotions out.  Some questions to ask yourself, and be truthful, is how useful it is, does it hold precious meaning or have I used it the past 6 months.  If answer is no, throw it away.  Broken items can be a problem too, if you have not yet fixed that old vacuum, you most likely never will, throw it out. 
  2. Give It Away - One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.  You have some items that no longer work for your décor or lifestyle, but doesn’t mean it does not have value for someone else.  Give it away to friends, charity or thrift shops.
  3. Sell It – This one should be used with caution as it may hamper you from doing a good declutter and become too overwhelming.  If you have the time, energy and resources, this is a great way to make some extra money by holding a garage sale or selling online, but make sure you keep your priorities and reasons you are doing this in mind.
  4. Keep It – Again, be cautious with this one.  Don’t get me wrong; there are some items you may have that would work perfectly in your new home, an antique, a great décor item or something you still love.  It is important to take a mental inventory and ask yourself why you are keeping it or is it serving a purpose (whether functional or emotional).

In conclusion, decluttering is an essential part of the staging process to sell your home, but it is equally essential to create a more functional and stress-free environment for your new home.
